By Aaron Humes: While police are showing a firmer hand with the Belize River Valley issue, Commissioner of Police Chester Williams said the situation has not risen to the level of implementing a State of Emergency in the area.
Coincidentally, it has been just over a month since the State of Emergency for parts of Southside Belize City and Roaring Creek and Cotton Tree villages in the Cayo District was ended. Commissioner Williams said that so far the peace has been kept: “The people who were under SOE, who recently came out of prison – we are not getting anything from them. As a matter of fact, I can say to you that there is a lot we are doing to make sure that we remain in constant communication with them. Brother Nuri [Muhammad] is doing weekly, two meetings a week with them, meeting with them on a weekly basis, to make sure that if they have any issues, they have any concerns they have a medium by which they can express themselves. Some of them they would message me, they would call me if they have issues and we see how we can resolve it. Mr Grinage might get called, Mr Gamboa might get called, so one of us do have communication with them and we try to use that as a means of making sure that we listen to their concerns and see how we address it before it reaches that stage where people get shot or killed.”
While one person, Floyd Hyde, was killed on Reggae Street in Belize City earlier this month for the first murder in the City in two months, with 72 hours to go to the end of October that is one of just two murders reported countrywide this month, the other being Manuel Fernandez in Dangriga.
