By Rubén Morales Iglesias: The Premier League of Belize (PLB) will be playing Week 10 this weekend, either at the clubs’ home fields or at the FFB Stadium in Belmopan.

The PLB is in a bind because they have fallen behind by two weeks and need to complete the regular season before they can play the semifinals and final.

The final three regular season games were twice postponed over the past two weekends due to rain and bad weather affecting the country. The rains haven’t stopped, despite a brief respite on Tuesday.

PLB Secretary General Wilhelm Miguel told Breaking Belize News last weekend that they would consider the possibility of playing midweek. However, inside information from within the Premier League of Belize indicates that the PLB never seriously considered midweek games and opted to leave the final matches for the weekend.

The PLB is expected to assess the situation of the home clubs’ stadiums on Friday to determine if the fields are in good condition for the matches to be played as scheduled on Saturday and Sunday. If that’s not possible, the match or matches will be played at the FFB Stadium on Saturday or at the latest on Sunday.

Two weeks ago, the games were called off due to Tropical Storm Nadine. Then last weekend, the Edmund Marshalleck Stadium in Benque Viejo del Carmen, the Ambergris Stadium in San Pedro, and the Carl Ramos Stadium in Dangriga were waterlogged, causing the postponement of the matches for a second consecutive week.

A third suspension isn’t acceptable, so the solution is to take the games to the FFB Stadium, where the artificial turf has good drainage, allowing the games to be played on Saturday or Sunday even if it’s under rain .

So, at this point, we’ll wait and see. Leaders Verdes are hoping to play against champions Port Layola at the Edmund Marshalleck Stadium on Saturday at 7:00 pm instead of the Norman Broaster Stadium in San Ignacio. The San Pedro Pirates are banking on playing their game against Progresso on Saturday at 7:30 pm at Ambergris Stadium, while Wagiya are intent on doing the same at the Carl Ramos Stadium at 4:00 pm on Sunday.

The PLB will make a determination as the weekend gets closer.

PLB Weekend Schedule:

Saturday, November 2, 2024 7:30 PM Verdes FC vs Port Layola FC Edmund Marshalleck Stadium, Benque Viejo del Carmen
Saturday, November 2, 2024 7:30 PM San Pedro Pirates vs Progresso FC Ambergris Stadium, San Pedro
Sunday,  November 3, 2024 4:00 PM Wagiya SC vs Bandits Sports FC Carl Ramos Stadium, Dangriga
