By Horace Palacio: The United Democratic Party (UDP) sent a formal letter to Police Commissioner Chester Williams, reinforcing its position amid ongoing internal disputes over party assets and leadership. In a letter signed by UDP Secretary General Shary Medina, the party clarified that Mrs. Phillipa Griffith Bailey, a former Secretary General, was never a Trustee of the UDP and, therefore, has no authority over UDP properties, including the party headquarters on Youth for the Future Drive in Belize City.
The letter further asserted that the UDP alone holds ownership rights to the property, which was transferred to the party by the government in 2010. Medina explained that Mrs. Bailey, who resigned from her UDP role in 2013, had handed over all relevant assets before her departure, including any documents related to the property.
Addressing the escalating tension with the faction led by Tracy Panton, the letter condemned what it described as “fraudulent actions” by Panton and her associates. Medina accused the Alliance for Democracy of dishonestly asserting rights over UDP assets, despite having been formally expelled from the UDP. The letter assets that UDP’s leadership structure remains under Party Leader Shyne Barrow, Deputy Leader Hugo Patt, and Chairman Michael Peyrefitte.
In addition, Deputy Chairman Alberto August has filed a police report against Panton and other Alliance members, alleging trespassing and property damage at the UDP headquarters. The letter requested prompt action from law enforcement, citing concerns over unauthorized attempts to seize control of party assets.
As the matter unfolds, the UDP has reiterated its commitment to uphold its leadership and protect party assets.
