By Zoila Palma Gonzalez: In Sinaloa, Mexico, police have prohibited residents from wearing masks or costumes on Halloween to prevent confusion with criminals amid escalating cartel violence, Reuters report.
The state, known as the stronghold of the Sinaloa Cartel, has experienced deadly infighting since the arrest of drug trafficker Ismael “El Mayo” Zambada in the U.S. in July.
Since September, the violence has resulted in hundreds of deaths and disappearances, prompting the federal government to send in additional troops.
Sinaloa’s security secretary, Gerardo Merida, urged residents to avoid costumes and not to be out late, stating the measures aim to discourage the glorification of crime and protect citizens from being mistaken for gang members.
This year’s restrictions echo similar measures taken in other high-crime areas of Mexico, including Baja California and Sonora.
