International News: UN Security Council urges Israel to lift ban on UNRWA aid agency

By Zoila Palma Gonzalez: On Wednesday, the UN Security Council called on Israel to reverse its ban on the United Nations Relief and Works Agency for Palestine Refugees in the Near East (UNRWA), which has provided critical services to Palestinian refugees for decades.

The council emphasized that UNRWA is essential for humanitarian support in Gaza and that millions could be affected if its operations are restricted, DPA International reported.

The agency delivers vital services, including education, health care, and social assistance, across occupied Palestinian territories, as well as in Jordan, Lebanon, and Syria.

The Security Council expressed “grave concern” over Israel’s parliamentary decision to prohibit UNRWA’s operations in Israeli territory, warning that this could impede the agency’s ability to function in Gaza and the West Bank, where Israel controls border access.

UN Secretary-General António Guterres has appealed to Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu to allow UNRWA to continue its work.

Israel has historically criticized UNRWA, alleging that it has been compromised by Hamas infiltration and that some staff members were involved in recent violence.
