By Rubén Morales Iglesias: A three-man delegation from Taiwan’s Food Safety and Drug Administration on Friday concluded a visit to Belize to assess the country’s fishery production and processing system, with a view to opening the Taiwan market for the exportation of Belizean shrimp and other seafood products.

“The onsite inspection includes inspections of fish and fishery processing facilities, aquaculture farms, and an evaluation of the exportation process at the Port of Belize,” said Dr. Nathalie Gibson, the Belize Agricultural Health Authority’s (BAHA) Food Safety Director, to Breaking Belize News.

“Belize currently exports lobster to Taiwan and is seeking market access for shrimp and other seafood products.”

According to Gibson, the Taiwanese team, which has now concluded their assessment, visited four shrimp farms and four shrimp processing facilities to observe the handling of shrimp and to determine if Belize’s regulations and certification systems meet their standards. In addition to shrimp, the delegation also evaluated the handling of conch and lobster.

The Taiwan inspecting team is expected to produce a report within three months. Before their departure, they will advise BAHA of any weaknesses in Belize’s shrimp certification system that may need improvement.

As Dr. Gibson mentioned, Belize’s shrimp industry has been seeking new export markets, and Taiwan appears to be a promising opportunity.

The visit commenced on Monday, October 21, with an opening ceremony that included the participation of the Ambassador of Taiwan to Belize, Lily Li-Wen Hsu, and senior officials from the Ministry of Agriculture, Food Security and Enterprise, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Foreign Trade, and BAHA.

The Taiwan Food Safety Team’s onsite inspection concluded on Friday, November 1, with a closing meeting and ceremony.
