San Pedro Pirates vs Progresso still on for Saturday night

By Rubén Morales Iglesias: Everything looked set for Verdes to play the match of the season against champions Port Layola at 7:00 pm Saturday night at the Edmund Marshalleck Stadium in Benque Viejo del Carmen, but a heavy downpour on Saturday afternoon soaked the pitch, causing the Premier League of Belize to call off the game.

While Verdes’s game is off, the San Pedro Pirates match against Progresso is still on for 7:30 pm at the Ambergris Stadium in San Pedro on Saturday night.

The Verdes-Port Layola match will now be played at 4:00 pm Sunday at the FFB Stadium in the capital city, Belmopan. This is the third time the Verdes-Port Layola game has been postponed.

Our sources in Benque say it rained in the morning, but the sun came out and the field looked good enough to play. However, the heavy rain in mid-afternoon left the field waterlogged, and the match commissioner called off the game.

Verdes, however, have sent us photographs taken after 4:30 pm that according to them show a ‘playable’ pitch. According to Verdes, they had taken care of the goal area where water had settled earlier in the day, but our sources say that the field got soaked again following the afternoon rain.

Verdes said their real time photos of the pitch (just before 5:00 pm) show that ‘line in front of the benches have saturation but 60% is off the field of play”.

The PLB faces international pressure to finish the competition by a certain date, so they had already decided that if matches couldn’t be played at the clubs’ home fields on Saturday or Sunday, they would be moved to the FFB Stadium, which has artificial turf and good drainage. A game can be played there even if it is raining constantly.

Meanwhile, the Wagiya-Bandits game is slated for 4:00 pm at the Carl Ramos Stadium in Dangriga on Sunday.

The PLB has had to postpone these last regular season games twice before because of bad weather. That’s the reason they made the plan to move them to the FFB Stadium in Belmopan if necessary.

Verdes had warned fans in the match advertisement that if the match couldn’t be played in Benque, it would be relocated to the FFB Field for Saturday night. The late decision has now moved the game to Sunday.
