“Where was his voice?” Tracey Taegar-Panton assails Senior UDP official after public comments

Posted: Saturday, November 2, 2024. 7:58 pm CST.

By Aaron Humes: She promised to hold her tongue, but Tracey Taegar-Panton held back little else in a social media post seriously going after an unnamed leading United Democratic Party (UDP) colleague.

“Leaders must be prepared to make the difficult decisions. Leaders must lead. We will stay the course. Our … supporters and the Belizean people deserve leadership with integrity, leadership with compassion, leadership that seeks to serve,” Taegar-Panton wrote.

She continued, directly addressing the unnamed colleague and claiming, “Where was his voice when a formal petition was sent to the Chairman requesting an urgent NPC Meeting to be convened? Where was his voice when 232 delegates of the NPC petitioned for a National Convention and were not even given the courtesy of a response? Where was his voice when 208 delegates sent a petition to the Chairman to trigger the recall?… Where was his voice when 8 Standard Bearers were being arbitrarily removed from their Constituencies? Where was his voice when 4 of the most Senior Representatives of the Party were being purportedly expelled from the party without cause of due process? Where was his voice when 4 new Standard Bearers were being unilaterally imposed on Constituencies without consultation with the respective Constituency Executive Committees? Where was his voice when there was an attempt to disenfranchise and silence the voices of delegates who were duly elected to serve their communities? Where was his voice when the former PL, Chair, and Deputy Chair were repeatedly dismissive of the Party’s Constitution to advance personal agendas? Where was his voice when the very democracy of our party was being compromised? Where was his voice when it mattered most?”

Hugo Patt, who the attacks above are purportedly against, continues to support Barrow, and for his part, told Channel 7 that, “…in this particular case, I’m just explaining to the people, look, it is not my position of one over the other. For me right now, it’s very important for us to preserve the institution of the United Democratic Party.” Patt said the UDP had agreed to go into the 2025 elections with Shyne Barrow as the party leader and he does not believe Tracy’s attempts to take over the party’s leadership at this time made sense.
