By Horace Palacio: A Belize Defence Force (BDF) soldier is recovering after an unusual incident last Thursday at Price Barracks in Ladyville, where he was run over by a military pickup truck. The soldier, who had been attending a regimental dinner, was reportedly making his way back to his quarters when he fell asleep on the road.
Brigadier General Azariel Loria, the Commander of the BDF, shared details of the incident, explaining, “The soldier apparently dozed off on the poorly lit road. Vehicles were moving through the area as others were also returning to their sleeping quarters. Unfortunately, one of those vehicles ended up running over him.”
The soldier sustained only minor injuries and is currently recuperating at home. Brigadier General Loria expressed relief at his recovery, saying, “He was properly run over by a pickup truck, yet he survived and is doing well.”
Questions have been raised regarding the circumstances, including whether the driver involved was under the influence of alcohol. General Loria confirmed that an investigation is underway to determine the specifics. “We are looking into all aspects, including whether the driver was drinking,” he said, adding that the driver’s license would be temporarily suspended pending the outcome of the investigation.
