Exciting development for Arenal Village: Sustainable Water and Energy Project approved

By Aaron Humes: According to reports from Arenal Village in the Cayo District, a transformative project promises to improve its water supply and energy sustainability. This initiative has been made possible through the support of Cayo West area representative Jorge “Milin” Espat and alcalde Mirto Nah, with funding from the German embassy in Guatemala City.

In the next two weeks, the village will receive funds to replace its existing communal water pump. This upgrade comes hand-in-hand with the installation of 60 solar panels, allowing residents to pump water using sustainable solar energy starting mid-December.

“This is a monumental step for our community,” said a village representative. “By harnessing solar power, we’re not only reducing our energy costs but also contributing to a more sustainable future.”

Over the next seven years, the village hopes to enhance its energy efficiency further. The savings accrued from lower energy costs are planned to be used to acquire a power wall, optimizing energy storage and allowing for additional savings. In addition to the water pump and solar panels, Arenal Village is poised to expand its water storage capabilities. A larger water tank is on the horizon, eventually accompanied by a complete filtration system that aims to provide residents with some of the cleanest water in the country.

Future plans also include a purification system at the old well—projected to be established within the next four to five years—as well as a small pump house near the river to facilitate access to water for construction and agricultural needs.

“This comprehensive project will bring long-term benefits to our village over the next seven years,” the representative noted. “It’s an opportunity that will significantly enhance our infrastructure and quality of life.”

This project significantly changes Arenal Village’s dynamics, paving the way for a greener and more efficient community.
