Hard Rock Boyz claim historic victory at the William Dawson Sprite Basketball Tournament 2024

By Aaron Humes: In a thrilling conclusion to the William Dawson Sprite Basketball Tournament 2024, the Hard Rock Boyz clinched the championship title for the third consecutive time, marking a historic moment in the tournament’s eight-year history. The final day of competition, held at the St. Martin’s De Porres Swift Hall, saw a packed crowd of over 300 supporters cheering on their favorite teams as they battled for the coveted prizes.

The tournament, which commenced in 2016, has become a significant event in the community, and this year’s exciting climax featured intense matchups among four top teams. The day was filled with high-energy gameplay and sportsmanship, culminating in a thrilling finale where the Hard Rock Boyz triumphed with a score of 33-26 against the Orange Court Generals, securing a well-deserved championship title.

In the first game of the day, the Hattieville Underdogs edged out Don One with a nail-biting score of 34-32, earning third place in the competition. The excitement was palpable as fans cheered and gasped at every play, their energy elevating the atmosphere in the hall.

Alongside the main event, special awards were presented to recognize individual talents and contributions, celebrating the spirit of basketball within the community. Juavann Morgan, 16, of the I.G Ballers team, was awarded the Youngest Participant, while Clement Palacio, 59, of the Tora Bora team, took home the award for the Oldest Participant. Kendale Clare from Mahogany Heights was named Top Scorer, with Kieron Salazar of the Survivors Ballers receiving the Best Defense award. The title of Most Valuable Player went to Raheem Thurton of the Hard Rock Boyz, and the Best Disciplined Team award was presented to the Western Paradise Ballers. Bowen & Bowen/Sprite was recognized as the Top Sponsor of the tournament.

The William Dawson Sprite Basketball Tournament 2024 was made possible through the generous support of various sponsors, including Sprite, the Ministry of Home Affairs, the Belize Police Department, the Leadership Intervention Unit, and many more. The event also benefited from the efforts of the referees, desk officials, community helpers, and passionate fans.

As the tournament concludes, anticipation builds for next year’s event, with the Hard Rock Boyz setting a new standard for excellence in the tournament’s future.
