By Zoila Palma Gonzalez: Officials in Mexico and across Latin America are closely monitoring Tuesday’s U.S. presidential election, particularly Donald Trump’s proposed immigration policies, UPI reports.
Mexicans are also considering how a new U.S. president will interact with recently elected Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum.
Travis Bembenek, CEO of Mexico News Daily, notes the personal ties many Mexicans have across the border, making U.S.-Mexico relations crucial.
Trump has ramped up rhetoric against illegal immigration, claiming it threatens the U.S., despite evidence showing current border apprehensions are at historic lows.
Illegal crossings surged during President Biden’s term, averaging 2 million per year from 2021 to 2023, but have recently stabilized due to Mexico’s efforts to manage migrant flows and U.S. policy changes.
Analysts warn that if Trump wins, there could be a rush of migrants attempting to enter the U.S. before he tightens border policies.
Bembenek suggests that while Trump’s approach may be harsher on immigration, his administration signed the USMCA trade agreement, which benefited Mexico.
Conversely, Kamala Harris opposed the deal, raising concerns about future trade relations.
Ultimately, he concludes that it remains unclear which candidate would be better for Mexico, given the complexities of the situation.
