By Zoila Palma Gonzalez: Tropical Storm Rafael has formed in the Caribbean, with tropical storm conditions anticipated to begin in Jamaica late tonight.
At 4 PM EST, the storm was located approximately 175 miles south of Kingston, Jamaica, and about 395 miles southeast of Grand Cayman, moving north at 9 mph.
A Tropical Storm Watch is now in effect for the Lower and Middle Florida Keys, from Key West to west of the Channel 5 Bridge, as well as for the Dry Tortugas.
A Hurricane Warning has been issued for the Cayman Islands, while a Hurricane Watch is in effect for several provinces in Cuba, including Pinar del Rio and La Habana. Jamaica is under a Tropical Storm Warning.
As of the latest update, maximum sustained winds have increased to near 45 mph, with further strengthening expected.
The storm is projected to approach Jamaica late tonight, move near the Cayman Islands late Tuesday, and reach Cuba on Wednesday.
Meteorologists forecast that Rafael may become a hurricane by Tuesday.
