By Rubén Morales Iglesias: Belize’s Cory Williams captured the gold medal in the Caribbean Elite Cycling Championship held on Sunday on the Heroes Highway Circuit on November 3, 2024, in Guyana under the aegis of the Caribbean Cycling Union.

Williams beat his competitors in a ten-man sprint, which included two Under-23 riders, clocking three hours, 46.07 minutes (3:46.07) for the 96.875-mile (155 km) Road Race. Belizean Derrick Chavarria finished sixth overall and second in the Under-23 category.

John Céspedes from the Dominican Republic finished second, and Guyanese Briton John clinched third place.

With the Road Race gold, Williams completed a splendid performance at the Caribbean Championship, having won the bronze in the Individual Time Trial on Saturday. Bermudian Conor White, who had finished second ahead of Williams in the time trial, finished sixth in the Elite Category, also with the same time. The Bermudian ITT gold medalist Kaden Hopkins was 16th, two laps behind.

Belize’s Justin Williams, Cory’s brother, finished 18th, also two laps behind. The third Elite Belizean cyclist, Giovanni Lovell, did not start the race.

With Chavarria’s silver medal in the Under 23 category, Belize finished with one gold, one silver, and one bronze.

More than 100 men and women cyclists from 19 nations, affiliated with the Caribbean Cycling Union and the Pan American Cycling Confederation, competed in the two-day event.
