By Rubén Morales Iglesias: Belize’s Derrick Chavarria captured the silver medal in the Under 23 Category of the Elite Caribbean Cycling Championship held on Sunday on the Heroes Highway Circuit in Guyana under the aegis of the Caribbean Cycling Union.
Chavarria finished sixth overall and second in the Under 23 category behind Cuban Randol Rodríguez, who was third overall. Both finished in a ten-man sprint with the same time as Elite winner, Belizean Cory Williams, who clocked three hours, 46.07 minutes (3:46.07) for the 96.875-mile (155 km) Road Race.
A second Cuban, Amed Oliva, finished third, one minute and 12 seconds later. Belizeans Jyven Gonzalez and Leon Leslie did not finish.
With Chavarria’s silver medal, Belize finished with one gold, one silver, and one bronze. Williams won the other two medals, earning gold for the Elite Road Race and bronze for the Individual Time Trial on Saturday.
More than 100 men and women cyclists from 19 nations, affiliated with the Caribbean Cycling Union and the Pan American Cycling Confederation, competed in the two-day event.
