By Zoila Palma Gonzalez: Today, American voters are heading to the polls to elect their next President.
The outcome of the 2024 election, a tight contest between Democratic Vice President Kamala Harris and former Republican President Donald Trump, may not be clear on election night due to narrow margins and possible recounts in key swing states.
Polls close starting at 6:00 PM with the last polls closing at 1:00 AM early Wednesday.
While some races are usually decided on election night, the close nature of this year’s contest could delay projections.
In Pennsylvania, for example, a recount is triggered if the margin is less than half a percentage point, as it was in 2020, BBC reports.
Legal challenges and potential election-related issues could further slow the counting process.
More than 100 pre-election lawsuits have already been filed, primarily by Republicans challenging voter eligibility.
However, the vote-counting process has sped up in some states, like Michigan, and fewer mail-in ballots are expected compared to 2020, when mail voting surged due to the COVID-19 pandemic.
Experts predict the race will hinge on results from key swing states, including Georgia, North Carolina, Pennsylvania, Michigan, Wisconsin, Arizona, and Nevada.
In past elections, results have been declared on election night, such as in 2016 when Donald Trump was announced the winner just hours after polls closed.
However, the 2020 election saw a delay until November 7 due to the tight race in Pennsylvania.
