International News: Trump says first call as President will be to Mexico’s President Claudia Sheinbaum

By Zoila Palma Gonzalez: At a rally in Raleigh, North Carolina, on Monday, former President Donald Trump revealed that his first call as president would be to Mexico’s newly inaugurated leader, Claudia Sheinbaum.

Trump said he would warn Sheinbaum that if Mexico does not stop the flow of migrants and illegal drugs into the U.S., he would impose a 25% tariff on all Mexican imports, Newsweek reports.

“I haven’t met her, and I’m going to inform her on day one or sooner, that if they don’t stop this onslaught of criminals and drugs coming into our country, I’m going to immediately impose a 25 percent tariff on everything they send into the United States of America,” Trump said.

In addition, Trump indicated that his position would encourage Mexico to send soldiers to its southern border, along Guatemala and Belize, to prevent migrants from moving north.

Trump framed the tariffs as a means to pressure Mexico to deploy soldiers to secure its southern border, preventing migrants from traveling north. “It’s got a 100% chance of working,” Trump declared.

The former president also reflected on his relationship with Mexico’s previous leader, Andrés Manuel López Obrador, calling him a “good man” but joking about his socialist views.

Trump mentioned his past efforts to secure a border wall during his first term and his 2019 tariff threats, which led to a deal that saw Mexico deploy its National Guard to its southern border.

Sheinbaum, a left-wing politician from Mexico’s Morena party, has pledged to work with the next U.S. president, but Mexico’s Foreign Ministry has emphasized that the country’s migration policies are independent of U.S. politics.
