By Rubén Morales Iglesias: The highly anticipated Lionman Triathlon has been rescheduled for Sunday, November 10, after being postponed in September due to the King Tide. The event is organized by the Belize City Council, the National Sports Council, the Belize National Triathlon Association, and Councilor Kaya Cattouse.

However, the Lionman Triathlon, which features $3,500 in cash and prizes, has been moved from Belize City to the George Price Highway. The 750-meter swim will be held in the Caribbean Sea in front of the Belize Coast Guard Base at Mile 4. The 12.05-mile ride will depart from the Coast Guard Base to the Fabers Road Roundabout, where it will make a U-turn and head to the Mile 8 Roundabout, make another U-turn, and head back to the Coast Guard Base. The 3.6-mile run will start at the Coast Guard, head to the Fabers Road Roundabout, and return.

Back in September, the King Tide, which affected Belize City, not only caused the shortening and rerouting of the Independence Day Parade on September 21 but also led to the postponement of the Lionman Triathlon. The Lionman Triathlon Organizing Committee announced on September 20 that the event was postponed due to the King Tide swelling the swim area by the Memorial Park and flooding streets on the cycling and run route in Belize City.

“Flooding along Marine Parade, Princess Margaret Drive, and high river levels pushing more debris downstream, we had to postpone,” Belize National Triathlon Association president Giovanni Alamilla said at the time.

Now, with the new date set, the Lionman Triathlon is ready to welcome athletes from across the country, though Alamilla could not specify how many participants will compete. He added that the BNTA has been in contact with various high schools and expects a number of teams to enter the event.

The event features six categories:

  • Individual Women’s
  • Individual Men’s
  • Mixed Relay
  • Junior Individual Women’s
  • Junior Individual Men’s
  • Junior Mixed Relay
