By Zoila Palma Gonzalez: Today, Vice President Kamala Harris called President-elect Donald Trump to concede the 2024 presidential race.

Trump secured 277 Electoral College votes, surpassing the 270 needed to win, with key victories in Wisconsin, Michigan, Pennsylvania, Georgia, and North Carolina.

Trump is now the 47th president of the United States and is the 2^nd U.S. President to serve non-consecutive Presidential terms.

Trump’s win also marked the Republicans’ return to control of the U.S. Senate for the first time in four years, Yahoo reports.

Harris, who is scheduled to speak at Howard University at 4 p.m. ET, reportedly emphasized the importance of a peaceful transfer of power during her brief phone call with Trump.

The 2024 election follows a global trend of incumbent parties losing power, with the U.S. joining other nations like the UK, Japan, and Portugal in ousting their ruling parties.

In a message to staff, Harris’s campaign chair Jen O’Malley Dillon acknowledged the loss but urged supporters to view the fight as ongoing, emphasizing the need to protect America from the impacts of a Trump presidency.

With the election decided, Trump’s second inauguration is set for 75 days from today.
