By Aaron Humes: The Guardian newspaper is the official party organ of the United Democratic Party – but given the party’s internal dissension, it doesn’t feel like a surprise that two separate versions came out today.
One is penned by long-time editor Alfonso Noble, who has backed Albert area representative Tracey Taegar-Panton to lead the Party, and the other by Moses ‘Shyne’ Barrow supporter and long-time propagandist for the Party, Delroy Cuthkelvin.
Per Channel 5 News, Cuthkelvin’s version consists mostly of pro-Barrow articles except for one article about the KHMHA Workers’ Union. Noble’s version is 9 pages long and looks more like the typical Guardian, including attacks on the Briceño Administration and ads. It also includes the paper’s information, such as the editor, publisher, and contact information.
Amid the internal fight over who leads the UDP, Panton and her faction took control of the party’s headquarters and organs – the Guardian and WAVE Radio, which continues to operate – in late October.
Noble told Channel 5 News today of the “other Guardian,” “I thought it was a school project. You know, children are given these assignments to do various things, sometimes in the media and what have you, and create a newspaper and that kind of thing. And I was flattered, actually, that a child would come up with such an idea of doing a school project…I’m proud of myself really and of the work that we do at the Guardian newspaper.”
Noble further joked that “the child” might be “suffering from some makoabi or goma of what has taken place in the leadership of the UDP and they would want to place the former leader on every page.”
We are told an injunction hearing to determine who controls the Party assets will be heard in the High Court on Friday.
