By Zoila Palma Gonzalez: Hurricane Rafael, currently located about 200 miles northwest of Havana, Cuba, and 215 miles west of Key West, Florida, is moving west-northwest at 9 mph.
As of 9:00 AM CST, the storm’s center was at latitude 24.5 North and longitude 85.2 West.
The storm is expected to continue a gradual westward motion through the weekend as it moves over the southern Gulf of Mexico.
Maximum sustained winds have decreased to 100 mph, making Rafael a Category 2 hurricane.
Hurricane-force winds extend up to 30 miles from the center, while tropical-storm-force winds reach out 115 miles.
Some additional weakening is expected in the coming days due to dry air, wind shear, and reduced oceanic heat content.
Rafael is likely to remain a hurricane as it moves through the Gulf, with a potential for further weakening early next week depending on its exact path.
