Premier League of Belize: Wagiya punish Bandits 3-1, dump Belmopan club into last place

By Rubén Morales Iglesias: Wagiya wrapped up the Premier League of Belize regular season with a 3-1 victory over the Belmopan Bandits at the Isidoro Beaton Stadium in Belmopan in a home game for the Southern side on Thursday night. This win catapulted them out of last place.

Wagiya played their home game on their rivals’ turf after three consecutive postponements over the last couple of weeks due to rain.

Clay Flores scored for Wagiya in the 37^th minute. Humberto Valenzuela tied the match for the Bandits in the 45^th minute, but Arlen Mendoza gave Wagiya the 2-1 lead in the 57^th minute. Levi Pixabaj put the game away with a goal in the 78^th minute, making it 3-1.

The score effectively places Wagiya in 5^th position over the Bandits.

The Bandits went into the final game of the regular season with four points, three more than the Dangriga club. Wagiya needed to win by two goals to overcome the negative goal difference they had against the Bandits.

Though both teams finished with four points, the 3-1 win effectively switches the final two positions, with Wagiya leapfrogging over the Bandits on goal difference. Wagiya scored 12 goals and conceded 32 for a -20, while the Bandits who scored five goals allowed 26 for a difference of -21.
