By Breaking Belize News Staff: Today, two ramp agents working for Aero Dispatch Services at the Philip Goldson International Airport appeared in the Belize City Magistrate’s Court following a violent altercation that almost turned deadly when a knife was introduced. The incident involved 27-year-old Darvin Jamaal Sutherland and 19-year-old Jiovanni Ishmael McKenzie, who reportedly engaged in a fight that left McKenzie injured.
Initially, it was rumored that Sutherland had stabbed McKenzie, but McKenzie later clarified that his injury was self-inflicted during the struggle when he fell onto his own knife. However, McKenzie, who had requested that charges be dropped, was informed by the court that the charge of “use of deadly means of harm” against Sutherland could not be dismissed immediately due to its serious nature. Both men were jointly charged with disorderly conduct, to which they pled guilty, agreeing to keep the peace with each other for three months. Violation of this agreement would result in a $200 penalty or a month in prison.
Sutherland was further charged with “use of deadly means of harm” and “wounding,” while McKenzie faced an aggravated assault charge involving a knife. Despite a police prosecutor’s objection, the Magistrate granted bail to Sutherland, set at $2,000, with conditions preventing him from contacting McKenzie or approaching within 100 yards of him.
After the court session, Sutherland claimed McKenzie initiated the confrontation, which escalated when McKenzie reportedly tried to attack him with a knife. Both men expressed their desire to settle the matter outside of court, though the charge of deadly means of harm against Sutherland remains pending. McKenzie’s family later escorted him back to the hospital due to lingering pain and weakness from his injury.
