Belize City man fined $410 for smoking cannabis in public

By Breaking Belize News Staff: A Holy Emmanuel Street resident, 19-year-old Ernest Belisle, has been ordered by the Belize City Magistrate’s Court to pay $410 in fines after pleading guilty to two counts of smoking cannabis in public. Belisle, who appeared unrepresented in court, was charged for two separate incidents of public cannabis use on Barbara Harris Street in Belize City on October 30 and October 31, 2024.

Police reportedly caught him smoking cannabis on both days. When faced with the charges, Belisle admitted guilt and offered no statement in his defense. As a first-time offender, he received a fine of $200 for each count, along with $10 in court costs, totaling $410.

Belisle has until January 15, 2024, to pay the fines. Failure to do so will result in two months of imprisonment for each count.
