Belize City woman jailed for outstanding fines after theft conviction

By Breaking Belize News Staff: Paulette Ann Geraldine Meighan, a 54-year-old Belize City resident, is back in jail after being convicted of theft and failing to pay over $2,265 in outstanding fines. Meighan, who admitted to struggling with addiction, appeared unrepresented in Court #7 today, where she pleaded guilty to stealing a $285 blue beach cruiser bicycle on October 30, 2024.

In her statement to the court, Meighan explained that the bicycle held sentimental value. She claimed it was left behind by her recently deceased boyfriend, and out of frustration over not receiving items she felt were promised to her, she stole the bike and sold it for $20. She appealed to the court for leniency, requesting a fine instead of jail time.

The magistrate granted her request, imposing a $500 fine plus a $5 court fee, due by December 2024. However, Meighan’s unpaid fines from previous convictions—including resisting arrest and mischievous acts—led to her immediate committal to prison.
