Weather Experts monitoring Hurricane Rafael and new disturbance in the Caribbean

Posted: Friday, November 8, 2024. 9:54 am CST.

By Zoila Palma Gonzalez: Meteorologists are closely monitoring Hurricane Rafael, which remains a powerful system over the central Gulf of Mexico, and another disturbance developing near the Greater Antilles.

As of 9:00 AM CST, Hurricane Rafael was located about 230 miles north-northeast of Progreso, Mexico, and 535 miles east of the mouth of the Rio Grande.

With maximum sustained winds of 110 mph (175 km/h), Rafael is currently moving westward at 9 mph (15 km/h), though a slower west-northwestward motion is expected in the coming days.

Experts predict the storm will meander over the central Gulf of Mexico through early next week, with steady weakening anticipated.

While Rafael poses no immediate threat to land, its strength and slow movement are being carefully tracked.

Experts advise that coastal areas remain vigilant as the hurricane continues its path across open waters.

In addition to Rafael, meteorologists are keeping an eye on a developing system in the Caribbean.

A trough of low pressure, stretching from the central Caribbean Sea northeastward across Hispaniola and into the southwestern Atlantic, is producing disorganized showers and thunderstorms.

While this disturbance has a low chance of rapid development, there is a 20% chance of it strengthening into a tropical depression in the next 48 hours as it moves westward near the Greater Antilles.

Regardless of whether this system intensifies, heavy rainfall is expected across Puerto Rico, the Virgin Islands, Hispaniola, and the southeastern Bahamas through Saturday, potentially leading to localized flooding.
