By Rubén Morales Iglesias: The Muffles College Bobcats captured third place over TCC Scorpions in the National Secondary Schools Sports Association (NSSSA) Volleyball Tournament at the Orange Walk Multipurpose Center on Saturday.
Northern champions, the Muffles Bobcats upended the favourite Southern champions, the TCC Scorpions, 3-2 (18-25, 25-20, 30-28, 20-25, 15-10) in their second and final game of the four-team tournament that features the four regional champions.
The defending national champions and Central Zone winners, the Saint John’s College Wildcats, are aiming for their fifth consecutive national high school volleyball title later Saturday when they meet Western champions, Benque Viejo del Carmen’s Our Lady of Mount Carmel High School (MCHS) in the final. The SJC Wildcats have dominated the competition since 2018. They followed up with wins in 2019, 2022, and 2023. No competitions were held in 2020 and 2021 due to the Covid-19 pandemic. SJC have already won the Central Zone championship five years in a row.
The Muffles College Bobcats fell to the SJC Wildcats 3-0 (25-20, 25-18, 25-21) on Friday while the TCC Scorpions lost a similar game to Saturday’s when they fell 3-2 (25-20, 20-25, 21-25, 33-31, 15-12) to Mount Carmel.
In the girls’ competition, Saint Catherine Academy will play San Ignacio’s Sacred Heart College in the final later Saturday. Orange Walk technical High School are facing the TCC Scorpions for third place.
The tournament, organized by the NSSSA, is hosted by Belize High School of Agriculture.
