Saint Catherine Academy clinch 18th consecutive NSSSA Girls Volleyball Championship

By Rubén Morales Iglesias: Belize City’s Saint Catherine Academy (SCA) Seahawks clinched their 18^th consecutive National Secondary Schools Sports Association (NSSSA) Volleyball Tournament title at the Orange Walk Multipurpose Center on Saturday.

The SCA Seahawks defeated San Ignacio’s Sacred Heart College (SHC) Hawks 3-0 (25-14, 25-13, 25-20), continuing to make history in Belize high school volleyball. Their 18 titles could have been more if not for the Covid-19 pandemic, which canceled the tournament in 2020 and 2021. At the regional level, SCA have now won the Central Zone championship for 30 consecutive years.

Like last year, Akili Jones was named the Most Valuable Player of the tournament.

In the semifinal round on Friday, SCA defeated Orange Walk Technical High School (OWTHS) 3-0 (25-5, 25-9, 25-5), while the Sacred Heart Hawks triumphed over the Toledo Community College (TCC) Scorpions 3-0 (25-20, 27-25, 25-21).

Earlier on Saturday, the Northern champions, OWTHS girls, beat the Southern champions, Toledo Community College (TCC) Scorpions, 3-2 (18-25, 24-26, 27-25, 26-24, 15-6) in a highly competitive match to secure third place.

In the boys’ competition, St. John’s College beat Benque Viejo del Carmen’s Our Lady of Mount Carmel High School 3-0 (25-16, 25-8, 25-14) securing their fifth consecutive national championship. The Muffles Bobcats won third place with a 3-2 (18-25, 25-20, 30-28, 20-25, 15-10) victory over the Southern champions, the TCC Scorpions.

The tournament, organized by the NSSSA, was hosted by Belize High School of Agriculture.
