By Rubén Morales Iglesias: Belize City’s Saint John’s College (SJC) claimed their fifth consecutive National Secondary Schools Sports Association (NSSSA) Volleyball Tournament title on Saturday at the Orange Walk Multipurpose Center. SJC defeated Western champions, Benque Viejo del Carmen’s Our Lady of Mount Carmel High School (MCHS), in the final with a score of 3-0 (25-16, 25-8, 25-14).

Like last year, Daniel Musa was named the Most Valuable Player of the tournament.

SJC won the NSSSA Volleyball Tournaments in 2018, 2019, 2022, and 2023 prior to this year’s victory. No competitions were held in 2020 and 2021 due to the COVID-19 pandemic. SJC has already won the Central Zone championship five years in a row as well.

In the semifinals on Friday, the SJC Wildcats defeated Orange Walk’s Muffles College Bobcats 3-0 (25-20, 25-18, 25-21), while Mount Carmel edged out Toledo Community College (TCC) Scorpions in five extenuating sets 3-2 (25-20, 20-25, 21-25, 33-31, 15-12).

Earlier on Saturday, the Northern Champions, the Muffles College Bobcats, beat the Southern champions, the TCC Scorpions, 3-2 (18-25, 25-20, 30-28, 20-25, 15-10) to claim third place.

In the girls’ competition, Belize City’s Saint Catherine Academy (SCA) Seahawks clinched their 18th NSSSA volleyball championship by defeating San Ignacio’s Sacred Heart College (SHC) Hawks 3-0 (25-14, 25-13, 25-20). The Northern champions, OWTHS girls, beat the Southern champions, Toledo Community College (TCC) Scorpions, 3-2 (18-25, 24-26, 27-25, 26-24, 15-6) in a highly competitive match to secure third place.

The tournament, organized by the NSSSA, was hosted by Belize High School of Agriculture.
