By Rubén Morales Iglesias: National champions Saint John’s College (SJC) will compete against Benque Viejo del Carmen’s Our Lady of Mount Carmel High School (MCHS) in the final of the National Secondary Schools Sports Association (NSSSA) Volleyball Tournament at the Orange Walk Multipurpose Center on Saturday.
SJC is aiming for their fifth consecutive national high school volleyball title, having dominated the competition since 2018. They followed up with wins in 2019, 2022, and 2023. No competitions were held in 2020 and 2021 due to the Covid-19 pandemic. SJC have already won the Central Zone championship five years in a row.
On Friday, SJC Wildcats triumphed over Orange Walk’s Muffles College Bobcats 3-0 (25-20, 25-18, 25-21). Mount Carmel had a much tougher match but succeeded against Toledo Community College (TCC) Scorpions in five extenuating sets 3-2 (25-20, 20-25, 21-25, 33-31, 15-12).
On Saturday, Muffles will face TCC for third place ahead of the grand finale.
In the girls’ competition, Saint Catherine Academy will play San Ignacio’s Sacred Heart College in the final.
The tournament, organized by the NSSSA, is hosted by Belize High School of Agriculture.
