By Aaron Humes: Two strong earthquakes struck off the coast of Cuba on Sunday morning, shaking areas from Orlando, Florida, to Jamaica. According to FOX Weather, while there’s no significant tsunami threat, the Pacific Tsunami Warning Center indicated there is a small chance of tsunami waves near the epicenter.
The U.S. Geological Survey reported the first earthquake was a magnitude 5.9 and occurred just before 11 a.m. Eastern Time, about 22 miles south of Bartolomé Masó, Cuba, at a depth of roughly 9 miles. The second, more powerful quake reached magnitude 6.8 and was registered about an hour later, approximately 25 miles south of the same location and at a depth of about 8 miles.
Following the second earthquake, the National Weather Service’s Pacific Tsunami Warning Center in Honolulu issued an alert. They emphasized that while there was no major tsunami threat, there was a slight possibility of small tsunami waves in areas closest to the quakes.
Meanwhile, the NWS National Tsunami Warning Center in Alaska confirmed that there was no tsunami danger for the East Coast of the U.S., the Gulf of Mexico, or the eastern shore of Canada. The PTWC mentioned that this would be their only notification, and local authorities would decide on the appropriate alerts for each country.
So far, there have been no reports of damage or injuries in Florida, and residents in Jamaica also felt the tremors. Officials from Jamaica’s Office of Disaster Preparedness and Emergency Management noted that while people across the island experienced shaking, there was no tsunami threat.
