Trump and Putin discuss Ukraine: What it means for Belizeans

Posted: Sunday, November 10, 2024. 3:33 pm CST.

By Horace Palacio: In a high-stakes phone call last Thursday, U.S. President-elect Donald Trump urged Russian President Vladimir Putin to hold back on escalating the war in Ukraine. According to The Washington Post, Trump reminded Putin of Washington’s robust military presence in Europe, underscoring the potential consequences of further aggression. The conversation, described as candid, comes as the conflict in Ukraine reaches new levels of intensity.

Though this war may seem a world away, its ripple effects are felt everywhere—including here in Belize. As a small nation committed to peace, Belize understands the far-reaching impacts of global conflicts. From economic instability and fluctuating fuel prices to broader geopolitical shifts, the stakes in Ukraine influence us all.

During his campaign, Trump made an audacious claim: he could end the war in Ukraine “within a day.” While he hasn’t shared specifics, his recent dialogue with both Putin and Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky signals his intention to step into the peace process. However, the Kremlin remains firm. On Friday, Putin reiterated that his conditions for ending the war include Ukraine abandoning its NATO aspirations and ceding control of four regions now claimed by Russia. Zelensky has flatly rejected these terms, instead pushing a “victory plan” that hinges on increased military aid from Western allies.

Meanwhile, the fighting on the ground shows no signs of abating. Reports describe fierce urban combat in the eastern Ukrainian city of Kurakhove, with both sides ramping up drone and artillery strikes. Russian troops, bolstered by reinforcements, are making a concerted push to capture key logistical hubs in the Donetsk region. Ukrainian forces are under immense pressure as they try to hold their ground against a numerically superior and heavily armed opponent.

For Belizeans, this ongoing conflict highlights the crucial role of international diplomacy. As a country that values sovereignty and peaceful resolutions, Belize stands in solidarity with efforts to bring an end to this devastating war. Beyond the headlines, this conflict challenges global stability and international norms—principles that resonate deeply with Belize’s own commitment to peace and cooperation.

The road ahead remains uncertain, but Trump’s conversations with Putin and Zelensky provide a glimmer of hope. The world will be watching closely to see if these diplomatic overtures can lead to a meaningful resolution. For now, Belize, like many other nations, hopes that dialogue and negotiation will triumph over further bloodshed.
