By Rubรฉn Morales Iglesias: In a high-tempo final at the Carolina Football Field in Corozal, Sarteneja FC made a great comeback and captured the Corozal First Division 2024-25 Opening Football Championship, defeating United Ballers 5-4 in a dramatic penalty shootout after a tense 2-2 draw on Sunday, November 10.
According to CFA Secretary Baltazar Chan, United Ballers took the lead in the first half with a goal by Clifton Sanker, the tournamentโs top scorer, in the 16th minute. Just six minutes later, Eric Rancharan doubled their lead, putting United Ballers in a strong position. However, Sarteneja FC pulled one back just before the half-time whistle, with Darnel Mossiah scoring in the 45th minute. The first half concluded with United Ballers leading 2-1.
In the second half, Sarteneja FC fought back, equalizing with a goal from Rajon Jones, resulting in a 2-2 stalemate that persisted through regular time. Extra time proved equally intense, ending without further goals, pushing the match to a penalty shootout.
The penalty shootout was nerve-wracking, with both teams converting all five initial penalties, leading to a sudden-death showdown. Sarteneja FC held their nerve and ultimately triumphed in the sudden death round, clinching the championship title 5-4 in the shootout.
In the third-place playoff, Calcutta Bulls edged past Libertad FC with a narrow 4-3 victory.
