By Aaron Humes: The Senate is meeting at the George Price Center, Belmopan, this morning with a loaded schedule.
Among the items on the agenda is the appointment of an acting Auditor General, currently deputy Maria Rodriguez, who will serve for four months dating back to September 1, after the re-retirement of long-time Auditor General Dorothy Bradley.
Minister of State for Finance Christopher Coye told colleagues that interviews are scheduled to begin shortly for a permanent replacement, but it was necessary to make an acting appointment to keep the office running.
He added that the Government is drafting legislation to address issues of internal auditing on government accounts and procedures, as well as procurement procedures.
Leader of Government Business Eamon Courtenay said that “where we are” on this important position “is no happy state of affairs,” but questioned whether it was better to have an acting person in the post as allowed by the Constitution since 2001, or none at all.
The whole Senate as the Constitution and Foreign Affairs Committee will review the motion.
