By Aaron Humes: Since Thursday, Belize has been affected by the outer rain bands of Tropical Storm Sara, which is still 170 miles southeast of Belize City as of 12 noon and slowed down to a westward track of two miles per hour. Maximum sustained winds are at 50 miles per hour.

At the start of today’s press conference, Chief Meteorologist Ronald Gordon indicated that the likeliest forecast track is a gradual move to the west-northwest going into Saturday, and making landfall on Sunday morning between Dangriga Town and Placencia in the Stann Creek District.

A Tropical Storm Warning remains in effect for Belize City southward to the Belize-Guatemala border and tropical storm force winds are already being felt. Significant strengthening is not expected for the next 24 hours as it meanders off Honduras, but as it is pulled upward to Belize some strengthening is expected and winds may rise to 60 or 70 miles per hour, or at the very outside Category 1 hurricane-force winds although this is not projected.

Bullet Tree Falls and Santa Elena recorded nearly 100 millimetres each of rain, leading to flash flooding, with the northern part of the country including Belize City receiving an inch or so on average.
