By Zoila Palma Gonzalez: Tropical Storm Sara, which is currently moving slowly near the northern coast of Honduras, is expected to approach Belize by Sunday.
As of 9:00 AM CST, the storm was located about 175 miles east-southeast of Belize City and about 30 miles south-southwest of Isla Guanaja, Honduras.
The storm is moving westward at 5 mph and is forecast to continue this motion for the next day or so before shifting to a west-northwestward path by late Saturday.
Belize is bracing for impact, with the government issuing a Tropical Storm Warning for areas from Belize City southward to the Belize-Guatemala border.
While Tropical Storm Sara’s maximum sustained winds are currently at 50 mph, with higher gusts, slight strengthening is possible if the storm remains offshore near Honduras.
As Sara nears Belize on Sunday, it will continue to bring significant rainfall to the region. Northern Honduras has already experienced extreme rainfall, with totals expected to reach 15 to 25 inches, and isolated areas possibly seeing up to 35 inches. This intense rainfall is triggering widespread flash flooding and mudslides, particularly along the Sierra La Esperanza mountain range, and is expected to spread further across Belize and neighboring countries.
In addition to Belize, the storm is likely to affect other parts of Central America, including El Salvador, Guatemala, Nicaragua, and parts of Mexico’s Quintana Roo state.
These areas could see 5 to 10 inches of rain, with some localized totals reaching 15 inches.
NEMO is urging residents to remain vigilant and prepare for significant flooding and hazardous conditions.
