By Zoila Palma Gonzalez: Tropical Storm Sara, currently tracking along the northern coast of Honduras, is expected to bring major flooding and mudslides to parts of Central America through the weekend.
The storm, which became the 18th named system of the 2024 Atlantic hurricane season, has already triggered heavy rainfall, with La Ceiba in Honduras reporting over 17 inches of rain by early this morning.
Sara is forecast to remain at tropical storm intensity as it continues its slow journey along the Honduran coast before moving into Belize and eastern Mexico by Sunday into Monday.
While the storm’s intensity is expected to remain relatively low due to its proximity to land and lack of a defined core, the rainfall threat remains severe.
Northern Honduras could receive up to 30 inches of rain, with other parts of Central America, including eastern Mexico and Nicaragua, facing up to 15 inches.
As Sara moves inland over Belize and Mexico, it is expected to weaken and dissipate.
However, the storm’s lingering rains will continue to pose a serious flood risk, particularly in mountainous regions, and the threat of mudslides remains high.
Emergency management agencies across the affected areas are on high alert as Sara continues to move toward Belize.
