By Rubén Morales Iglesias: The Ministry of Infrastructure Development & Housing (MIDH) has once again demonstrated its commitment to the safety and well-being of Belizeans by dispatching dedicated crews to address emergency situations caused by Tropical Storm Sara.

On Saturday morning, a hardworking crew was sent to clear a landslide at Mile 29 on the Hummingbird Highway. The landslide, triggered by heavy rains, disrupted travel along this vital route. The crew has been tirelessly working to clear the debris and ensure the highway is safe for motorists.

“Work is almost complete clearing the landslide on the Hummingbird Highway. Gotta give thanks to our guys who, without complaint, go above and beyond to get the job done,” the Ministry spokesperson said in a social media post at about 10:30 am on Saturday.

This is not an isolated effort. On Friday, MIDH crews were out in Cayo, clearing drains to alleviate flooding.

“Our crews are still out in Cayo clearing out drains to alleviate the flooding. We’re doing everything we can to alleviate the flooding. More rains are expected over the weekend, and we’ll be out working wherever the need arises,” the spokesperson said in a statement on Friday at 9:35 pm.

The MIDH had dispatched extra personnel, along with three backhoes, an excavator, and other equipment in the Cayo District.

“We will be working around the clock to alleviate the flooding caused by incessant rains, and to minimize as much as possible the hardship to our people caused by the rains and flooding,” the Ministry stated earlier on Friday.

The dedication and resilience of the Ministry’s personnel, who consistently go above and beyond during times of emergency, are evident in their swift and effective response to natural disasters.

Motorists are advised to drive carefully and be considerate of the teams working on the scene. The Ministry said it continues to monitor the situation and will provide updates as necessary.
