By Rubén Morales Iglesias: Travel from Melchor de Mencos to Flores in the neighbouring Guatemalan Department of Peten is cut off on Thursday morning as the highway that connects these two population centers caved in at La Máquina village, about half an hour from Melchor.
A culvert was washed away and the side of the highway collapsed, halting traffic to and from Melchor de Mencos to Flores on Thursday morning.
Long lines of vehicles are at a standstill on both sides of the road waiting for the road to be fixed, according to different news sources in Guatemala. The reports says that due to the constant rains after Tropical Storm Sara, Peten, particularly the area around Melchor, has been severely affected by floods which has now caused the highway to collapse.
