By Zoila Palma Gonzalez: The 2024 Atlantic hurricane season, which ends on Nov. 30, showed above-average activity, with 18 named storms, including 11 hurricanes and 5 major hurricanes.
The season’s totals aligned with predictions from National Oceanic Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) August outlook, which had forecasted 14 named storms, 7 hurricanes, and 3 major hurricanes.
After a mid-season lull, the Atlantic saw a record 12 named storms form after September, including seven hurricanes since Sept. 25, the most ever in that period.
Key storms included Hurricane Beryl, the earliest Category 5 hurricane on record, and Hurricane Helene, which made landfall in Florida as a Category 4 storm, causing catastrophic flooding and more than 150 fatalities.
Hurricane Milton, a Category 3 storm that hit Florida in October, produced rapid intensification and significant damage, including 46 tornadoes.
Tropical Storm Sara made landfall in Belize on Sunday, November 17 and its outerband rains caused flash flooding in Western Belize prompting cancellation of classes and closure of the market and businesses.
“During this active season in the Atlantic, NOAA’s National Weather Service, National Hurricane Center and NOAA Research hurricane scientists continued to advance our modeling and observation capabilities, preliminarily resulting in the most accurate NHC track forecasts ever issued at all forecast lead times in 2024,” said Michael Brennan, Ph.D., director, NOAA’s National Hurricane Center.
