Landlord accused of burglary and theft of money, remanded to prison

By Aaron Humes: Police have formally arrested and charged 58-year-old Goldburn Tillet, of Pelican Street Extension, Belize City, for the crime of burglary.

This follows an investigation into a report by a Belize City resident. Tillett, a retiree from the Ministry of Works, was taken into custody for allegedly stealing $130 from a woman to whom he had rented a room at his residence on Pelican Street Extension.

According to reports, the incident unfolded on Monday, November 25, when Tillett is said to have entered the apartment of his tenant unlawfully and taken the cash.

When he appeared in court Tillett defended himself by insisting that he provided the accommodation out of goodwill as Reyes needed shelter with her child. He pleaded not guilty.

While there was no opposition from the prosecution regarding bail, the Magistrate set it at $2,500, requiring one surety of the same amount. Unable to meet the bail requirements, Tillett was remanded to the Belize Central Prison, where he will await his next court date scheduled for January 9, 2025. The Magistrate imposed conditions for Tillett’s bail, stating that if he is granted bail in the future, he must not interfere with the complainant or engage in any similar offenses; violations could result in revocation of bail.
