By Aaron Humes: Leon Anthony Lodge, 24, of Mile 2 ½ George Price Highway, is out on bail of $2,000 but his mother, sister and a friend are all on remand pending meeting bail in response to a charge of possession of controlled drugs with intent to supply.
Jointly charged with Lodge are 51-year-old Juliet Richards; 31-year-old Shanice Brown, who is deaf-mute; and Eldy Jane Taylor of Krooman Road who was visiting at the time.
Lodge took responsibility for the 85.1 grams of cannabis found by police, explaining that the weed was for his personal use and that of his friends and not to sell and that his mother and sister do not smoke; Taylor admitted she was there to smoke however.
The court warned Lodge he was facing up to three years in prison and $10,000 in fines but he wanted to maintain the plea, leading Taylor to ‘suck her teeth’ and tell the court she needed to get to work.
The group was held in the holding cells and in the afternoon, the magistrate elected to enter an equivocal plea of not guilty in order for the group to find legal representation and offered bail of $2,000 and a surety to each accused. They return to court on January 9, 2025.
Conditions to bail are that they must attend their court dates and refrain from being arrested and charged with similar offenses. The drugs were found in a barrel in the back room of a residence on Hemsley Street, Belize City.
