By Rubén Morales Iglesias: In a significant development at the latest Council of Ministers meeting held on Thursday in Costa Rica, Belize’s Minister of Agriculture, Food Security, and Enterprise, José Abelardo Mai was appointed as the Representative of the Council of Ministers to the Executive Board of CATIE (Centro Agronómico Tropical de Investigación y Enseñanza or Tropical Agricultural Research and Higher Education Center). This appointment underscores Belize’s growing influence in regional agricultural and environmental initiatives.

During the meeting, several key resolutions were made, reflecting the commitment of the council to furthering agricultural and environmental progress in the region. The main outcomes of the meeting included:

Appointment of Minister Mai as the Representative of the Council of Ministers to the Executive Board of CATIE, marking a significant recognition of Belize’s leadership in the sector.
Approval of the Biannual Plan 2025-2026: The council gave the green light to the comprehensive plan, aimed at addressing critical agricultural and environmental challenges over the next two years.

Ratification of Key Appointments: Several important appointments were ratified, including:
- Stephen Kresovich, Professor at Cornell University, USA, as a member of the Executive Board representing the International Community.
- Ana Maier, Dean of Zamorano, as a representative of member countries on the Executive Board.
- MBA Maritza Dominguez from IDIAP, Panama, as a representative of member countries on the Executive Board.
