By Zoila Palma Gonzalez: The Belize Forest Department recently received an illegal logging report in the vicinity of Franks Eddy Village, Cayo District.
There, officers met Welfredo Cristales in possession of timber without a permit or license.
Cristales had 15 pieces of Santa Maria flitches measuring a total volume of 570 board feet.
He was charged for illegal possession of Forest Produce.
Cristales pled guilty in the Belmopan Magistrate Court.
He was fined $2,279.60, and the timber was forfeited to the Forest Department.
The Forest Department urges the public to report any suspicious activities related to illegal logging, wildlife trafficking, human-wildlife conflict, or forest-related violations.
“The conservation of our forest resources is a collective responsibility, and we rely on the support and vigilance of the community to protect our forests. The Forest Department remains committed to enforcing our laws to safeguard our forests and manage the rich biodiversity that makes our country diverse and unique,” the Forest Department said.
