By Rubén Morales Iglesias: As anticipation builds ahead of the first leg of the Premier League of Belize 2024-2025 Opening Championship Final, San Pedro Pirates head coach, Brazilian Jorge Nunes, remains calm and collected. Nunes is no stranger to high-pressure situations, making the upcoming face-off against Belize City’s Port Layola FC at 7:30 pm on Saturday, November 30, 2024, at Ambergris Stadium in San Pedro, just another challenge in his impressive career.

The San Pedro Pirates, who last clinched a national championship in 2019, are hopeful of reclaiming the title under the experienced guidance of coach Nunes. The Brazilian has had a stellar year, having already secured the NAIC Championship with San Pedro’s Terror Squad.

Nunes, who arrived in Belize many years ago to play for Juventus FC in the 1990s, stayed on and transitioned into coaching. He has become a very successful coach, leading various teams to numerous victories. This year alone, his accomplishments include winning the U-15 and U-17 championships with Progresso FC in Orange Walk, the U-21 championship with the Orange Walk selection, and the National Amateur Interdistrict Championship with Terror Squad from San Pedro. Additionally, he assisted head coach Charlie Slusher in leading Belize’s Men’s National Team (BMNT) to win its group in League C, secure promotion to League B in the Concacaf Nations League, and potentially qualify for the Gold Cup.

Now, the question remains: Can Nunes lead the Pirates to victory against Port Layola FC, who have flourished under rookie coach Julius Allen after Slusher left to take over the BMNT at the beginning of the season?

We’ll have to wait and see.

For now, the Pirates are eager to add another trophy to their collection and are calling on their fans to come out in full force to support them in the first leg at home on Saturday.

Tickets for the match are available at $25 now but will cost $35 at the gate.
