Press Release

In recognition of International Jaguar Day, the Forest Department, through the Global Environmental Facility (GEF) 7 Project, “Enhancing Jaguar Corridors and Strongholds Through Improved Management and Threat Reduction,” proudly announces the signing of groundbreaking data-sharing agreements and the official launch of an innovative Wildlife Database Platform. These initiatives represent a significant step in advancing conservation efforts, promoting data-driven decision-making, and fostering stakeholder collaboration.

Data-sharing agreements were signed between the Ministry of Sustainable Development and Climate Change, the Forest Department, the Belize Audubon Society, the Ya’axche Conservation Trust, the University of Belize-Environmental Research Institute, the Foundation for Wildlife Conservation, the Belize Zoo, and Wildlife Conservation Society to promote collaborative data-sharing on wildlife conservation in Belize.

The data-sharing agreements facilitate high-quality data exchange among partners to strengthen conservation initiatives while promoting responsible data collection and use, data-sharing practices, and protection of sensitive information on jaguars, associated wildlife, and their habitats.

The Forest Department also unveiled the National Wildlife Database Platform, an advanced digital tool designed to centralize and share critical wildlife data among stakeholders, researchers, and policymakers. The Wildlife Database Platform is designed with cutting-edge technology allowing for the integration of real-time wildlife monitoring data for the tracking of species populations and prey movement.

This data-sharing partnership and Wildlife Database Platform launch marks a transformative moment in wildlife conservation. By uniting efforts and embracing technology, the Forest Department and its partners aim to address challenges such as species loss, prey movement, and climate impacts on our wildlife.

The “Enhancing Jaguar Corridors and Strongholds Through Improved Management and Threat Reduction,” project is funded by the GEF, implemented by the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP), and executed by the Ministry of Sustainable Development and Climate Change through the Forest Department.

This initiative underscores the power of collaboration and innovation in safeguarding wildlife. For more information on this initiative contact the Belize Forest Department or visit the Forest Department Facebook page at www.facebook.com/fdbelize
