Belize advocates for justice and equality on World AIDS Day

Posted: Sunday, December 1, 2024. 6:36 pm CST.

By Horace Palacio: Belize’s National AIDS Commission marked World AIDS Day with a renewed call to action under the theme “Take the RIGHTS Path,” emphasizing dignity, equality, and universal access to care for individuals living with or affected by HIV/AIDS.

Dr. Giovanni Solorzano, Chairperson of the Commission, highlighted progress made in combating the epidemic but stressed the need to address lingering inequalities. “Together, let us take the RIGHTS path—a journey toward justice, equality, and hope for a world free from HIV/AIDS,” he said during his statement.

The Commission acknowledged the nation’s strides in providing support and resources but noted challenges in ensuring equitable access to healthcare for all, particularly among vulnerable populations. Dr. Solorzano urged citizens to reflect on past achievements while remaining committed to raising awareness, supporting those in need, and advocating for inclusive policies.

Belize has faced significant challenges in combating HIV/AIDS, with approximately 3,700 cases reported by 2023. Despite progress, the adult prevalence rate remains one of the highest in Central America at 4.0 percent. The country achieved a milestone last year by earning World Health Organization certification for eliminating mother-to-child transmission of HIV/AIDS, yet disparities persist.

World AIDS Day serves as a global reminder of the need for collective action, unity, and hope in addressing the epidemic. The Commission reiterated its mission to eliminate barriers and foster a society where no one is left behind in the fight against HIV/AIDS.
