Bus conductor sent to jail after assaulting traffic officer in viral incident

By Breaking Belize News Staff: A 31-year-old part-time bus conductor and caregiver from Biscayne Village, Evan Nicholas Cain, also known as “Sweet Buoy Caine,” is behind bars after pleading guilty to assaulting traffic officer Kenrick Deshield during his official duties earlier this week.

The incident, captured in an amateur video that quickly went viral, occurred last Tuesday when Deshield, 46, was inspecting a crowded Bluebird bus near Miles 2/3 on the Philip Goldson Highway. While carrying out his duties, Deshield was reportedly pushed off the bus by Cain and another man identified as Ocean Blease.

Cain appeared in Court #7 last Thursday, unrepresented, where he was charged with aggravated assault against a public officer. Upon hearing the facts of the case, Cain maintained his guilty plea, telling the Magistrate, “I wah plea guilty, Mam,” and later expressing his desire to “get over this” to return home to care for his mother.

The Magistrate, however, emphasized the gravity of the offense, noting that Deshield was performing his lawful duties at the time. She remanded Cain to the Belize Central Prison pending sentencing, scheduled for Wednesday, December 4, 2024. During this time, the court will summon traffic officer Deshield to provide an opportunity for Cain to apologize in person.

According to the report, Deshield was conducting checks on a bus with excessive passengers when Cain, wearing a yellow shirt, allegedly told him, “You need to get off the bus,” before forcibly removing him with the help of another individual.

The case has drawn public attention due to the video footage, which highlights the risks faced by public officers performing their duties.
