Fatal accident claims the life of Miriam Cordon on George Price Highway

By Horace Palacio: A woman lost her life in a tragic accident on the George Price Highway on Monday night, following a series of events that left several others injured and a driver facing multiple charges.

Miriam Cordon was among three occupants of a red Chevrolet Equinox that had stopped near the scene of an earlier crash between miles 25 and 26 of the highway. The Equinox, carrying Cordon, Joshua Magana, and Angel Pastrana, was parked on the roadside when a white Ford Econoline van collided with its rear. The force of the crash caused significant injuries to all three occupants.

Cordon, who suffered critical injuries, was rushed to Karl Heusner Memorial Hospital (KHMH) but tragically succumbed on the way. Her companions, Magana and Pastrana, remain hospitalized with varying degrees of injuries.

The driver of the van, identified as Leroy Nunez, was detained at the scene. Police have since charged him with “manslaughter by negligence,” “driving with alcohol concentration above the prescribed limit,” “causing death by careless conduct,” and “driving a motor vehicle without due care and attention.”

Authorities continue their investigation into the incident, urging drivers to exercise caution and responsibility on the nation’s roads.

Family and friends remember Cordon as a kind and vibrant individual whose life was tragically cut short. Plans for a memorial service are underway as loved ones come to terms with the devastating loss.
