By Rubén Morales Iglesias: The Ministry of Agriculture, Food Security, and Enterprise (MAFSE), in collaboration with the Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA), is currently conducting assessments for farmers involved in the Value Chain Improvement Project and the Smallholder Horticulture Empowerment Program (SHEP). These evaluations seek to review the progress and impact of these initiatives as they near completion.

“The assessments, led by Mr. Kenichi Machida, Sustainable Agricultural Development Advisor, and technical officers from the Ministry of Agriculture, focus on examining how the projects have improved farming practices and strengthened the value chains of potatoes, coconuts, and pitahaya,” MAFSE said in a statement. “Additionally, the team is assessing how farmers are adopting the SHEP approach, utilizing tools and support provided for market-oriented production.”

The team is going directly to the farmers to verify that the support, training, and innovative solutions provided are improving productivity and livelihoods ensuring that the farmers are well-equipped for future success.”

The Ministry of Agriculture and JICA will host a special seminar on December 11, 2024, in the Cayo District where they will gather with stakeholders to discuss the future of agricultural value chain improvement in Belize.

The MAFSE statement said the Ministry of Agriculture and JICA remain committed to advancing sustainable agriculture, building resilience, and contributing to Belize’s food security.
